The portrait of Elisabeth (or Cornelia) – life-sized and full-length which was exceptional at this time – is incomplete, as can be seen from the unfinished background and the rather nonchalantly painted dress. This may be due to the premature death of Joris Vekemans in January 1625. Elisabeth herself died at the age of eleven, in 1628. Her attractive girl’s face, proud and bashful at the same time, is perfectly captured.
