The Museo Carlos de Amberes in Madrid has been opened for the public since November 5. To be seen there are 15th and 16th Century Masters from the Northern and Southern Netherlands. The Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp (KMSKA) is loaning 21 works of art out from its collection through February 2 2015.
The 21 paintings that the KMSKA sent to Madrid offer a good showing of the artistic production from the Baroque in the Southern Netherlands. Peter Paul Rubens is, for example, represented by: the Education of Mary and The Lamentation over the dead Christ. In addition, 2 works from the female artist Michaelina Wautier are to be admired in the Spanish capital, amongst which is Saint Agnes and Saint Dorothea. Furthermore, big and small names from the Antwerp collection are included in the loan: Joachim Beuckelaer, Frans Snijders, Cornelis de Vos (Portrait of a Family), Jacob Jordaens I, Anthony van Dyck, David Teniers II and Joannes Fijt.
The other works of art are loaned out by the Madrid Museo del Prado, the Spanish Biblioteca Nacional, Patrimonio Nacional and the Fondation Custodia in Paris. The Museo Carlos de Amberes is located in a former church, the housing of the eponymous Fundación Carlos de Amberes. The foundation is named after a diplomat of Antwerp origin, who in 1594 gifted his entire fortune to the city of Madrid in order to establish the institution.
The Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp is currently closed for a renovation that will last until 2017.
