This small painting refers to the marital bliss of Rubens. This is just as we often recognise his immediate family members in Rubens’ religious paintings. For this beautiful tableau, presumably Isabella Brant, the first wife of Rubens, stood as the model, and in the Christ Child we can recognise the facial features of Nicolaas, his second son.
