Rubens made this oil painting sketch in 1628 as preparation for an altarpiece upon commission of the Saint Michiel’s Church in Ghent. However, in 1628 and 1629, he subsequently remained in Madrid and London, where he worked on the closed peace treaty between Spain and England of 15 November 1630. Because of the diplomatic mission, Rubens could not complete the commission for Ghent. He asked Anthony van Dyck to take over his task and to paint the altarpiece for the Saint Michiel’s Chruch, where this crucified Christ is still displayed.
