17th century

Fijt is a pupil of Snijders and a highly renowned painter of animals. Bird concerts were a popular theme in the 17th Century, and often they were ironic allusions. All birds that are depicted on the painting, do not have the characteristic of being able to sing: a chicken, a parrot, a blue heron, a rooster, a dove and a peacock. The jay is, however, indeed a songbird, but he looks at an illegible score. Probably they are the subjects of a parody.
