Although Fijt primarily engaged himself as an artistic painter with hunting scenes and game tableaux, his still lives nevertheless command respect and most especially his floral pieces. More or less fifty years after the floral piece of Beert, Fijt recalls the same theme. A half-century of development leaves its trace. The flowers of Fijt appear more natural than those of Beert, they are freed from their static constraints and take on more space. A subtle play of light and a subdued expression of a range of colour strengthen the perspective. It is as if there is a dialog amongst the various flowers. A virtual diagonal axis, from lower left near the heavy head of the drooping roses towards upper right along the two, white vivacious lilies, is responsible for this.
