Presumably de Momper departed for Italy after he had gained his free-Master status in Antwerp in 1581. Ultimately in 1590 he was back. His journey over the Alps left him inspired, and after 1600 we frequently see rock formations, grottos and mountains turn up in de Momper’s landscapes.
This period is the most productive, yet yields scant innovation. However much the landscapes after 1600 continue to delight the viewer, they are often merely variations on the same theme. De Momper seldom signed or dated his works. The study of his art is based upon stylistic comparisons and connoisseurship.
