Sebastian is standing with his hands behind his back tied to a tree. His chest and right leg are pierced with arrows. An angel is carefully removing an arrow from his chest. A bow and a quiver are lying at the saint’s feet. Behind them a vast landscape stretches to the horizon. An angel pulling arrows from St Sebastian’s body is quite a rare theme. In fact, it only occurs in the art of the Southern Netherlands at the time of the Counter-Reformation.
