This tableau sketches for us an image of the insurmountable poverty. Monks portion out bread to the poor who compel themselves before the gates of the cloister. The weakest, such as a mother with her child on her arm, the lame and the blind have no chance of approaching the grating. Above the gate stands a sculptured piece of Saint Martinus, the symbol for Charity.
